FOCUS ON THIS…WEEK #10 ~ MY PET ~ I WISH

Last week was a very different week in our home, which will also explain my “disconnect” from the cyber world for the same approximate length of time…

Monday before last, I saw a little dog running all over my neighborhood.  I saw different neighbors trying to catch the little guy, but he just danced away from everyone.  I’m sure we all had the same concern that he would get hit by a car.  I lost track of him after he lured me down to the lake, then hid on me.  Arriving back home with everything hurting, I was extremely worried about the dog.  But, I’m too old to chase fast little dogs around the neighborhood.

It was near quitting time for the working population, so I said a prayer and hoped the extremely clever little dog would be sitting innocently on the doorstep when his owners arrived home.  I went to my kitchen and began preparing our evening meal.  But then…another neighbor knocked on my door to ask me if I lost a dog.  A quick peek into her car confirmed that she caught little Houdini…  We chatted a minute while I explained that he was not my dog and she explained why her two large labs were the reason why she could not take him home.  Sooo…I ended up with a houseguest.  He was housebroken, crate trained and walked well on a leash, so he was no problem except to the old cranks around this house…who shall remain unnamed…

Well…without going into a lot of details, I will just say that the poor little guy was 7 pounds of too much spunk for our household of old people and old pets.  With lots of help from the neighbor lady, I posted signs in the neighborhood, listed him on craigslist and in our local county animal control pet forum for lost pets and perused every lost pet site I could find – no luck finding the little guy’s owner.    It became sadly apparent that nobody cared what happened to him. So, after a week of no-luck, we were forced to find a Chihuahua rescue to take him.

I called him Squirt and he will be in my heart always.  Just before I handed him over to the lady from the rescue organization, I hugged Squirt and wished him a wonderful life.  And then my heart broke….

    1. I was afraid to take him to our local animal shelter because he is fearful at first, snapping and growling. It took him a couple of days to warm up, but was cautious. He was just fine with us by the end of the week. But, lots of people would return him to the pound after a day or two of the snapping/growling. We allowed him to come to us on his own terms. The second day here, he jumped up to sit on my husband's lap and the third day, he trusted me enough to jump up into my lap. After that, it was a piece of cake. The big problem was our cat who stayed hidden or was misbehaving when she wasn't hiding. She was completely traumatized and showing no signs of getting over it because Squirt will chase anything that runs. She ran... The other cats? No problem.... He only chases what runs....

  2. I wish I were able to help, too, by posting signs on my side of the neighborhood and at the SPCA (now that I know where it's located). I've heard stories about dogs and cats walking for miles and days, hoping to find their human parents. I hope this was not the case with Squirt. I just can't believe Squirt's parents weren't looking for him. There is a reason for everything, intentional and unintentional. I hope Squirt finds a furr-ever home.

    1. He didn't even have a microchip. I couldn't get him into a rescue here, so I drove to Brevard county to get him into a good chihuahua rescue foster home. They will make sure he gets into a good home. I sure wish I could have kept him.

  4. Squirt is so cute. You tried, Darlene. He's probably in a home with lots of energetic kids by now.

    1. I did and I hope and pray that he gets his forever home sooner than later. I miss him so much. He was only in my home for 1 week, but I fell so deeply in love with him as if he was here for his whole life.

    1. He wasn't mine. I found him, but couldn't find his owner. I couldn't keep him, so I had to turn him over to a chihuahua rescue organization. They will make sure he gets a good home.

    2. I re-read....I was confused, I thought you were looking for your own little man when you came across this doll face. I get it now! Duh

He is adorable and no doubt he will, if he hasn't already, be scooped up and loved as he deserves.

Your big ole heart might well have saved him from some car or truck tires and for that, and a lot more, you get giant hugs of appreciation!
